Flashes of post-industrial, northern life are made up of familiar landmarks and structures like cooling towers, chimneys and tower blocks. They linger in memory, even as the physical world continues to change.
This lion is an affectionate reflection of how landscapes evolve, how communities adapt and how memory preserves what time transforms.
The artist
Jonathan Wilkinson
Jonathan is a painter, illustrator and printmaker based in Sheffield. His work explores and celebrates the landscapes, structures and shared spaces that define urban life in post-industrial Britain, especially in the North.
For almost 20 years, he’s been documenting the evolving fabric of Sheffield (and other cities) through a distinctive visual language that blends graphic clarity with emotional resonance. His work is rooted in place and memory, often drawing on the architectural relics of the past: cooling towers, cinemas, working men’s clubs – filtered through a contemporary, stylised lens.
