Out of this World is inspired by the chemist and cosmonaut Dr Helen Sharman, who was the first British person in space and was born in Sheffield!
In 1989, Helen heard a callout on the radio which said: “Astronaut wanted.
No experience necessary”, and went on to be selected from nearly 13,000 applicants for “Project Juno”. In 1991, she launched into space and spent eight days upon the Mir Space Station. This lioness wears a replica of the spacesuit worn by Helen on her historic journey into the stars.
The artist
Charlotte Mason
Charlotte Mason is a designer and illustrator based in Wigan, in the North West. She studied BA Hons Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern design at Leeds Art University and has worked as an in-house designer in the greeting card industry, creating cards and paper products for well-known retailers.
She enjoys experimenting with various styles and mediums, but feels most at home when painting. Her work is known for its detailed and intricate style, often featuring designs that tell a story.
