When we said Pride of Yorkshire was going to be our biggest campaign ever, we really meant it! We’re delighted to announce that Project Pixel – a student-led game development group at The University of Sheffield – is working on a free-to-play mobile game inspired by Pride of Yorkshire.

The game will run independently from the trail’s official app, and will instead complement the trail by offering free, accessible tower-defence-style gameplay for families and young players to engage with the project in a whole new way!

Since it was founded, Project Pixel has been committed to creating 2D mobile games in aid of charity, and empowers students to bring their skills to the table to create real-world products with impact. For this game, Tom Foster, Project Lead at Project Pixel is working with a team of 20 students studying a range of university courses, including programmers, musicians, graphic artists and game developers.

On developing the game for Pride of Yorkshire, he said; “[developing games for charity] motivates everyone. You’re not just making something for yourself or your CV – you’re working on something that matters.

“Knowing that children might play this while they’re in hospital is quite a big responsibility… it definitely makes you want to get it right, and gives you that push to make something really good!”

Despite the pressures of deadlines and university life, Tom says the process has been hugely rewarding: “It can be stressful, but it’s also really exciting. Seeing the artwork come in, hearing the music and watching everything come together – there are so many talented people involved!”

The Project Pixel are full steam ahead working on the game, and are hoping to have it ready in time for the start of the trail. When it’s ready, it will be free to download from both the Apple and Google Play Stores.

Pride of Yorkshire will run from June – September across South Yorkshire. 150 life-sized lion sculptures will be set loose across Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster in a celebration of art, business, community and creativity!
